How to create a custom pilot figure for your mobile suit display

A mobile suit display becomes more personal when it includes the person inside the machine. A pilot figure adds scale, character, and a sense of narrative, whether the scene shows a calm pre-launch moment, a battlefield emergency, or a hero standing beside a completed Gunpla build.

You do not need advanced sculpting skills to make a convincing cockpit figure. A modified commercial pilot, a seated figure from a different kit, or a simple scratch-built character can all work when the proportions, pose, colors, and placement support the mobile suit.

The key is to treat the pilot as part of the composition rather than an isolated miniature. Plan the figure around the machine’s scale, cockpit design, and visual personality before choosing tools or paint.

Plan the character before cutting plastic

Start with the pilot’s role in the scene. A seated figure gripping the controls creates a different impression from a standing mechanic, a helmeted pilot waiting beside the suit, or a damaged character being helped away from the cockpit.   • Leave enough clearance for the canopy, hatch, and surrounding armor.
