Build a Custom Action Base for Dynamic Gundam Poses

A well-designed action base does more than keep a model upright. It supports the pose, frames the composition, and adds visual energy to a display without competing with the mobile suit itself. A custom base can also solve practical problems that standard stands often leave behind, such as awkward attachment points or unstable flight poses.

The best projects begin with the intended pose rather than the decoration. Decide whether the kit will appear launching, banking through space, bracing after an impact, or suspended above a damaged battlefield. That choice will guide the base shape, support arm, surface details, and color scheme.

Scale matters just as much as style. A base that looks impressive beside a 1/144 High Grade kit may seem undersized under a 1/100 Master Grade model. Measure the finished pose first, then design around its center of gravity and the amount of space needed for weapons, shields, and effect parts.

Choose the Pose Before the Base

Mount the model temporarily with clips, reusable adhesive, or a simple wire support. Test the angle from several viewpoints, especially from the front and the side. A dynamic pose should have a clear line of movement, with the torso, limbs, and weapons directing the eye in a deliberate direction.

Think about where the visual weight sits. A crouching suit may need a low, broad platform, while a flying pose can use a narrower base with a tall support arm. If the kit carries a large rifle or shield, position those accessories before fixing the support location. They can shift the center of gravity considerably.

Plan Materials and Scale

Common materials include acrylic sheets, MDF, plastic card, PVC board, wooden plaques, and leftover kit runners. Acrylic provides a clean sci-fi appearance, while MDF is easy to shape and paint. Plastic card works especially well for layered armor panels, vents, warning plates, and raised mechanical details.

For a support arm, brass rod offers strength and can be bent into a controlled arc. Clear acrylic rod keeps attention on the mobile suit, while aluminum wire is useful for experimenting with angles before committing to a permanent structure. Use a broad lower plate whenever possible, since a narrow footprint makes the finished display vulnerable to accidental knocks.

Draw the base at full size on paper or cardboard. Place the model’s feet, torso, and weapons over the drawing to check clearances. This inexpensive mock-up reveals whether the base will feel balanced and whether the support arm will intrude into the silhouette.

Build a Strong Foundation

Cut the main platform carefully and sand the edges before adding details. Rounded corners can make a space-themed base feel manufactured, while sharp stepped edges suit a military hangar or ruined-city setting. Add a second layer underneath if the material flexes when lifted.

A removable support is useful for transport and future posing. You can drill a socket into the platform and use interchangeable rods, or install a concealed magnet beneath a section of the model. Magnets should be seated securely and checked for polarity before they are glued into place.

For heavier kits, reinforce the support with a sleeve or a second contact point. A single thin rod may hold the model briefly but begin to bend over time. Test the completed structure with a temporary weight similar to the kit before applying paint and delicate surface parts.

Add Motion Through Structure and Effects

Dynamic energy comes from diagonals, arcs, and uneven visual weight. A rectangular base can remain interesting when the support leans, a panel angles upward, or a trail of debris points opposite the mobile suit’s movement. Avoid placing every detail parallel to the platform edges, since that can make the pose appear static.

Thruster flames, smoke, beam effects, and shell impacts can strengthen the story. Clear resin, cotton, translucent plastic, and painted wire all work for different effects. Keep transparent parts away from areas that need frequent handling, and make them removable when possible so the base is easier to transport.

Paint and Weather the Display

Apply the main base colors in thin layers so panel lines and raised details remain crisp.

Use restrained weathering to connect the model and the stand. Dry-brushed silver can suggest worn edges, while dark washes settle into vents and panel gaps. Oil streaks, dust pigments, and chipped paint are effective on industrial or battlefield scenes, but keep the strongest damage near the implied action rather than covering every surface evenly.

A small accent color can tie the composition together. Match the base markings to the mobile suit’s sensors, camera color, faction insignia, or weapon effects. Matte varnish suits concrete, metal, and painted armor; gloss varnish works better for warning lights, polished surfaces, and energy effects.

Check Stability Before Display

Before calling the project finished, test it through gentle movement and inspect every joint. The kit should remain secure when the base is lifted, rotated, and placed back down. Check that weapons do not collide with the platform and that the support does not show from the primary viewing angle.

Use this checklist during the final inspection:

  • Confirm that the platform sits flat on the display surface.
  • Check that the support arm does not flex under the model’s weight.
  • Verify that magnets, pegs, or clamps hold without stressing the kit.
  • Inspect clear parts for glue marks, fingerprints, and unwanted clouding.
  • Photograph the base from several angles before adding permanent effects.

A removable model mount makes cleaning and repairs much easier. Label interchangeable rods or sockets if the base supports more than one kit. Store fragile effects separately, particularly cotton smoke, thin antennae, and translucent beam parts that can snag during transport.

Share the Finished Scene

A custom action base becomes more useful when its construction can inspire another builder. Photograph the platform before mounting the kit, then capture close-ups of the support, weathering, and attachment point. These details help other hobbyists understand how the display was made, not just how it looks when finished.
